Roman Pavlyuchenko reveals 'strong desire' to remain with Tottenham despite being confused by Harry Redknapp's team selections

Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyluchenko insists he wants to stay at White Hart Lane, despite pressing concerns of his lack of first-team action under manager Harry Redknapp.

The 29-year-old finished the outgoing campaign with 14 goals to his name, making him the club’s second highest scorer. However, with just 25 starts in 53 games for Spurs, the former Spartak Moscow man’s future has seemed in doubt.

Contract negotiations began between the player and the club earlier this season, but the talks have so far failed to lead to an extension for the forward, with his current deal set to run out in 2013.

Redknapp’s search for another striker has fuelled further reports that one of the hitmen on north London would be leaving the club. However, Pavlyuncheko refuses to believe he will leave White Hart Lane anytime soon.

"There is a strong desire to pursue a career in Tottenham, with whom I have a contract," Pavlyuchenko told Sport Express.

"A new contract will be discussed after the holidays - my agent will travel to London to hold talks with the leaders of Tottenham."

The striker scored both goals on the final day of the season in Spurs’ 2-1 victory over Birmingham City, with Redknapp later expressing his love for the Russian’s talents, but also voiced his concerns at Pavlyuchenko’s apathetic attitude.

The former West Ham boss maintains he has a positive relationship with the forward, but the player admits he is frustrated about his staggered opportunities.

"He [Redknapp] can play one team one week, and then play a very different team the next. It is hard to understand," said Pavlyuchenko.

Spurs’ win last Sunday guaranteed a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and qualification to next season’s Europa League, but Pavlyuchenko believes the north London side can push for a Champions League place next season.

"I don't think we can become champions because Manchester United are strong but we certainly are able to take a place in the top three," he said.
